LikeFinland experienced Treetop Adventure Huippu in Espoo

Treetop Adventure Huippu was opened in Leppävaara Sports Park, Espoo, two years ago in 2015 - and it is constantly developing.

The most prominent novelty of this summer is 'Little Huippu' for smaller children. Little Huippu is a moveable wooden-framed adventure track with a platform height of 1.8 meters. There, small adventurers move in a secure harness. The Little Huippu stayed alongside the big Huippu until the Finnish Midsummer ("Juhannus"), and now it has been moved to Sello Shopping Centre in Leppävaara, Espoo.

Photo: LikeFinland.com

We experienced the treetop adventure as a family - two adults and two children (age of 6 and 10 years). We all had a great time!

There are eight high ropes courses at Huippu. Three of the courses - the easiest ones - are located on the top of the hill and the rest five at the bottom of the hill. Those (at the bottom) may run up to 18 meters above the ground.

When you come to Huippu for the first time, the adventure starts with a security training where the guides show how to use the harness and the safety system. All the adventure parks in Finland have their own security system that must be taken into account, for example, the belaying methods and the courses may differ from each other. Huippu has a continuous belay system.

It means that all adventurers on Huippu courses stay fastened to a safety line at the starting steps of each course, and they stays fastened until returning to the ground through the final dismounting slide.

You can always ask the instructors for advice at both the lower and upper courses.

Good to remember

In this season every climber has a ring-locked handle that is attached to the harness, which maintains the frontal direction in the final dismounting slide of each course. We found it very useful.

When you come to Huippu, it is good to dress for the weather in a comfortable outfit. The harness and a safety helmet are included in the price of the adventure. If you want, you can buy cheap climbing gloves from the ticket office.

The new ring (left) stops you spinning during the final slide. Photo: LikeFinland.com

Different courses

The courses are marked by different colours (green, blue, red, black) according to their difficulty. The green course is the easiest and the black course is the most challenging.

Of course, also this year, one of us, Henri, had to experience the Tarzan swing! Free fall over Leppävaara is worth experiencing! You get extra advice for Tarzan swing from Huippu's instructors.

The upper green and blue courses fit well for beginners and for children. Photo: LikeFinland.com

Safety Tips

  • Follow the security instuctions during the training carefully, and always ask if there is any question.
  • Thread a pulley of your harness into the zip wire at the beginning of each course.
  • Do not hold the cable at the final dismount slide. Make sure the previous adventurer has left the landing area.
  • Ask the staff to check the tension of your harness if you suspect that it has loosened.
  • Dress up by weather and exercise. Enjoy the high altitude! :)

Destination of the Month: Svartå Manor in Raseborg - one visit will capture your heart

We made a visit in one of the most beautiful manor houses in Finland, Svartå Manor, at the beginning of May 2017. The Svartå Manor is located in Raseborg, in the Western part of Southern Finland, 'South Coast Finland'. It takes one hour by car from Helsinki to get Svartå village, where we visited Svartå Manor for the first time.

The Svartå Manor environment is an old ironworks area. On the other side of the river there is the oldest mill in Finland that is still in function.

We were really surprised about the extent of the area - and above all - the beauty of the place. The wooden castle is surrounded by a wide variety of buildings and a lovely park area with its romantic bridges, statues and the unique water lily path.

Photo: LikeFinland.com

When we came to Svartå, we felt that we would be somewhere else than in Finland - even in a different era. Summer flowering was just beginning.

The yellow wooden castle, built in 1792, is one of Finland's most precious manor houses. The manor house, designed by well-known architects Christian Schröder and Erik Palmsted, is Finland's largest non-ecclesiastic (non-churchy) wooden building. Other special features of the Manor are the first hand-blown double windows in Finland, and parquet floors made of four different types of wood.

It was interesting to hear that the manor house has been owned by the same family for over 200 years, with the exception of a 45-year period in 1900s. Luckily, in 1985 Magnus Linder bought the Svastå Manor back to the family. Since then, the area has been actively developed, and the family company manages the restaurant and accommodation in the area.

The staff of Restaurant Linnankrouvi. Photo: LikeFinland.com

The most remarkable lords of the Svartå Manor were Magnus Linder II who built the manor, and Magnus Linder who later bought the manor back for the family. Hjalmar Linder, Finland’s richest man lived there at the beginning of the 20th century. He was great culinarist - the food and drinks were ordered from all over the world.

The current host of Svartå Manor is Magnus's son Filip Linder and his wife, Christine Linder, who is managing director of the restaurant and hotel operations. The Svartå Manor property is funded and protected by the National Board of Antiquities in Finland.

Svartå Manor Museum and guided tours

The big yellow manor house serves today as a museum. You can only enter the museum with a guide. The guided tours are open from 6th of June until 12th of August (2017). The tours are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. (www)

The tours are available in Finnish and Swedish and on request in English, German, French and Russian.

Gorgeous countryside hotel

In Svartå Manor you can stay at the countryside hotel consisting of five historical buildings built in the 19th century. Hotel offers rooms from single rooms to cottages that are suitable for families. The buildings are located in an idyllic park, where the scenic Mustionjoki River flows. A two floor suite 'Merlin’s Tower' is romantically situated right at the riverside.

Is the destination suitable for families with children?

n the yard of Svartå Manor there is no traditional playground with slides, swings and trampolines, but nearby, a few hundred meters away, there is a new public playground right next to the local beach, by the Mustionjoki River.

The environment and buildings, which most of the children have seen only in story books and thrilling stories of the castles' ghosts, will surely stay children's minds until adulthood. The guided summer tours of the museum are suitable also for children with an adult.

For the kids, there is also an orienteering map with tricky questions about the park.

Bicycles and a rowing boat with life jackets are available for the guests, as well as yard games like a Finnish lawn game 'Mölkky' and badminton.

Svartå Manor is great place to stay at least for a couple of days. At the same time, you can visit other great destinations nearby, such as Fiskars and Billnäs Ironworks villages, Tytyri Mine Experience in Lohja, and Raseborg Castle Ruins as well.

Extensive park area

The park surrounding the buildings of Svartå Manor is one of the largest private historical parks in Finland. We made a one kilometer walk at the park area, which feels like retreat for the soul with its water lily path over the water, romantic bridges and statues. The park is a great spot for picnic.

In the English-style park, you can admire its flowers and plants and exotic species of trees that Fridolf Linder planted in the park at the end of the 19th century.

Renewed restaurant Linnankrouvi

At the end of our visit, we enjoyed lunch in restaurant Linnankrouvi, a Neo-Gothic restaurant building built in the mid-1800's.

There was a large extension project for the restaurant building in the spring. A new bright pavilion was built to replace the terrace, which more than doubled the number of restaurant places, being now around 200.

Linnankrouvi invests in genuine flavors and uses near produced food products. 'Today's lunch' included asparagus salad, smoked salmon and creamy panna cotta with fruits. It was a very delicious meal and nice ending for our Svartå Manor visit!

LikeFinland explored: Unique and historical sea voyage around Suomenlinna fortress

LikeFinland team participated in a historical sailing tour on the Cannon sloop Diana sailing ship in Suomenlinna's coastal waters around Helsinki last summer.

The sailing tour offers a unique sea voyage in a special way with the crew of the 18th century: Shipbuilder of Viapori, Admiral Fredrik Henrik af Chapman and Captain Carl Fredrik Arnkhil with their crew.

The passangers participating the sailing tour this summer 2017 will be board from Suomenlinna.

"Suomenlinna, The sea fortress, founded in 1748, is a Unesco World Heritage site and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Finland. Suomenlinna is accessible only by water. A ferry service runs from the Market Square to Suomenlinna throughout the year. The trip to Suomenlinna takes 15–20 minutes and offers magnificent views of Helsinki and the surroundings from the sea."

Photo: LikeFinland.com

A 20-meter long and 4.5-meter-wide wooden Diana was built in Suomenlinna shipyard by a shipbuilding master Mikael Holmström in 2010-2014. Diana has been constructed with traditional building materials and methods by using drawings of the original ship architect Fredrik Henrik af Chapman and old documents from the Swedish fleet's drawing office.

A surprising detail is that Diana is the first electrified-engine passenger ship in the Finnish sea area!

Cannon sloops were specially designed for maritime cruises in coastal waters. Low-speed cannon sloops, with two masts and 15 pairs of oars, could also be rowed.

Photo: LikeFinland.com

The sailing started from the nearby Market Square in Helsinki. We all were excited because we had never been in such a sailing trip before.

The ship was sailed partly with the electric engine and partly with the sails. We tried some rowing too (!) - with help and tips of the crew naturally.

There was alltogether a dozen participants: adults who were interested in old sailing ships and families with children, keen on history, drama and action. We got them all!

Photo: LikeFinland.com

And there was really drama on this voyage! Admiral Chapman and Captain Arnkhil had a lively discussion about preparing the crew for the 18th century marine battle.

A backup crew was needed as well: Everyone had a chance to take part in rowing or in raising and lowering the sails. The rowing was successful when two people held one of the heavy oars that wasn’t allowed to fall into the sea. Eventually we landed on Vallisaari shore by ship's electric motor in a controlled manner by the back-up crew of two people.

Photo: LikeFinland.com

The sailing tour was a great and different, adventurous experience. The best part was, when both children and adults were allowed to participate in the Diana crew. Also the performance was entertaining and exciting with a fair dose of humour.

Mr Chapman and Mr Arnkhil performed well in their roles.

Please note

Diana is an open boat, so dressing according to weather conditions is important. Due to the wind, it may be chilly at sea even on a warm day. It is good to have a warm and relaxed casual outfit, as well as flat shoes, with you. In case of rain, it is good to bring a raincoat. It is also worth taking a bottle of water with you. Children can participate only with an adult.

LikeFinland explored: New destinations and impressive street art of Vantaa

LikeFinland team explored the fourth biggest city of Finland, Vantaa, in this spring 2017. We visited i.a. family destinations such as Heureka and new Pikseli Arcade as well as "Myyr York" street art region in Myyrmäki. Vantaa is located in the Helsinki capital area.

Vantaa's romantic manors with its beautiful natural surroundings, free museums, stunning street art and impressive new destinations make Vantaa an attractive city for travelers. Especially a wide selection of family attractions and outlets are a good reason to visit Vantaa.

IMPRESSIVE STREET ART

One of the destinations we visited was Myyrmäki in the Western side of Vantaa.

There has been given room for street art in Myyrmäki, which makes Vantaa even more interesting. Huge street art works, both in the station building and in its surroundings, have remained surprisingly tidy. In Vantaa, there are plans to spread the idea more widely.

Explore the street art of Myyrmäki with a mobile application (www)

Myyrmäki's New York -style history of street art extends to the 1970s, when the high 14-storey blocks of flats were built to this area. They almost seemed like skyscrapers in the youth's eye. The neighborhood with its train bridges was like in New York. That is when the name "Myyr York" was born.

WIDE SELECTION OF RESTAURANTS

The selection of Myyrmäki’s restaurants is surprisingly wide. At the area of Myyrmäki station and Myyrmanni shopping center there are restaurants that offers American style and vegetarian food and also Nepalese, Thai and Vietnamese flavors as well.

INTERESTING MUSEUMS WITH FREE ENTRANCE

Vantaa Art Museum Artsi, Myyrmäki

Artsi is a museum that specialises in graffiti, street art and performance. It celebrates the forthcoming centenary of Finland with an exhibition that will endure the whole year. The exhibition Vallaton – Rascal consists of four independent settings - by more than one hundred Artist guests - that change according to the seasons.

Vantaa City Museum, Tikkurila

New exhibition Room for Love - Speedway of Emotion was opened on Valentine's Day 2017.

The love exhibition is based on a 2-year project, in which the museum has collected love stories by interviews and online surveys from more than 100 people from Vantaa. The stories are mainly in Finnish or Swedish, but you can ask for information also in English, or book a guided tour.

It was interesting to read the love stories that had begun from the places we knew, as well as stories in which a single spice or cake recipe has brought two people together. The exhibition has a fascinating and positive surprise material, for example realistic and outspoken diaries of the 1990's.

It was fun to see what kind of objects people have saved from their past love stories. There was also a wall that was full of wedding pictures from different decades.

ROMANTIC MANORS OF VANTAA

A visit to the Vantaa City Museum's love exhibition can be conveniently combine with staying and dining in a romantic manor.

Hämeenkylä Manor

Hämeenkylä Manor with its beautiful pink and yellow manor houses is definitely worth a visit. The history of a cultural history extends to the 16th century.

The hotel and restaurant, as it is today, was opened to the public in 2013.

Hämeenkylä Manor is an ideal place for couples who want to spend a romantic weekend in a magnificent manor by relaxing and enjoying good food in a nice atmosphere.

King's Estate & The Old File Factory

Nearly 6 km from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, along Kehä III highway (Ring 3) or along beautiful bike paths east to Vantaanjoki, you arrive at the Kuninkaan Kartano Manor (King's Estate). The rooms of Manor have been used by the Swedish-speaking elementary school for about 80 years until the end of the 1970s, and later as the training facilities of the City of Vantaa.

Vanha Viilatehdas, The Old File Factory, located near the Manor house, was in operation until 1903.

Both restaurants are open to visitors during the opening hours and events.

There are open guided canoe tours at the Vantaa River. The excursion is perfect for everyone, and no previous experience of kayaking is needed. Good swimming skills is required.

NEW AND RENEWED DESTINATIONS OF VANTAA

Within a short time, Vantaa has gained many new interesting destinations, exhibitions and reforms.

Pikseli Arcade

LikeFinland team explored a new virtual reality park, called Pikseli Arcade, at Flamingo leisure world in Vantaa, near Helsinki. Pikseli,  opened in January 2017, is not only the first VR (virtual reality) park in Finland but in the whole Scandinavia to this extent!

There are 14 game rooms in Pikseli, which is located on the second floor at Flamingo. Pikseli lets you not only watch a movie or play a game, but to live inside it. The experience is unique.

We were positively surprised that Pikseli, with its kindly staff and wide selection of different games and VR experiences, is suitable also for those who are not so familiar with video gaming. Pikseli is also a unique holiday destination for those who are travelling in Helsinki area, located near Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.

Finnish Science Centre Heureka

We explored in this spring also a renewed Finnish Science Centre Heureka in Vantaa.

The Finnish Science Centre Heureka, located in Helsinki metropolitan area, in the heart of Vantaa city, Tikkurila, is one of Finland’s most popular leisure time destinations for all ages. In Heureka, visitors can experience the joy of discovery through spectacular exhibitions, planetarium films and events.

The expanded and renewed Science Centre Heureka reopened doors to the public on 28 January, 2017.

Renewed Finnish Science Centre Heureka. Photo: LikeFinland.com

At first sight Heureka looks more spacious. And no wonder, after all, there is now approximately 2 000 square meters more space than before. With small changes, Heureka has succeeded in creating quite a stylish package being a traditional class trip destination. It is definitely worth a visit with foreign guests - or for you, who are planning a trip to Finland!

There are so many things to see and experience in Heureka. One day is not enough, if you want to see and experience all that Heureka has to provide you.

It was great to notice that Heureka had built an area where children can design and create different things by themselves or together with an adult. And also that Heureka appears now as a Science Centre for people of all ages.

Scandinavia's first virtual reality park Pikseli Arcade was opened in Vantaa!

LikeFinland team explored a new virtual reality park, named Pikseli Arcade, at Flamingo leisure world in Vantaa, near Helsinki. Pikseli, opened in Jan 2017, is not only the first VR (virtual reality) park in Finland but in the whole Scandinavia to this extent!

Pikseli is suitable for almost all ages. For children under school age, the virtual reality game glasses may be too heavy to use for a long time.

Everyone is welcome to play without booking, but reservation in advance is recommended especially on Saturdays.

Elina is briefing Daniel.

Before gaming, players watch a guided video and the staff gives instructions how to play games or how to experience the virtual world. In VR games, the player is able to look at any direction by turning his/her head. The views change just like (s)he would be there for real.

Pikseli lets you not only watch a movie or play a game, but to live inside it. The experience is unique.

There are 14 game rooms in Pikseli, which is located on the second floor at Flamingo. There can be only one player playing the game in a game room at the same time, but two more can follow and encourage the player! They watch the screen how the game is going on.

Wide range of games

Pikseli has a surprisingly wide game selection. There are kids' games, action games, mountaineering, scuba diving and short films, even a mini opera! The game selection is constantly being reformed.

Pikseli Arcade gives nice experiences both for children' celebrities and also for working place kick-offs, not forgetting families. There is also a party room for groups, where you can sit down and enjoy drinks and snacks.

The staff is able to limit the range of games in each game rooms, as the selection also includes games that are not allowed for players under 18 years. You can stop the game at any time, if you don’t want to play it anymore, and choose a new game to play. The staff is happy to help you with little tips and tricks concerning the  games and equipment. The atmosphere was really good.

It is possible to get familiar with Pikseli's games in advance through the Pikseli Arcade web-pages, and it is recommended to book at least one hour to play. The game is nice and inexpensive to experience with a friend in the same game room, where you can easily take turns.

Very popular games for teenagers are for example Raw Data and Elven Assassin. On the other, the mountain climbing game Everest is liked by all the age groups and it is suitable also for the beginners. Google Earth is a great way to explore a holiday destination from the air before the trip - or afterwards.

Our LikeFinland team was positively surprised that Pikseli, with its kindly personnel and wide selection of different games and VR experiences, is suitable also for those who are not so familiar with video gaming. Pikseli is also a unique holiday destination for those who are travelling in Helsinki area, located near Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.
